ARTIST STATEMENTS & BIOS

CAROLINE PERKINS

STATEMENT

I have crafted a relentlessly penetrating self-portrait using a blend of universal and unique personal symbols. These symbols converge to create an emotional biographical narrative, encapsulating the essence of my life's journey. I have ambivalent feelings about whether I should expose my vulnerability to the viewer.

BIO

Award winning artist Caroline Perkins recently earned her Master of Art in Painting from the Royal College of Art. Her abstract figurations are woven with spirituality, emotions, and memories. Perkins has exhibited her art in several renowned galleries such as Soho Review Gallery, Unity Art Studio, and Winchester Art Gallery.

CHRISTINE DODD

STATEMENT

A thread which runs through a large part of my work is awareness of human energy and how it feels in my body. Harnessing its ebb and flow working with it intentionally and trying to capture in creative ways and make sense of it. Using willow which is a new material for me to work has enabled me to connect more physically with the sculpture and bring more of my energy into the work as well as accepting the limitations of the willow and going with its flow in return.

BIO

Originally from York and now based in Andover, Christine has recently closed her teaching studio of 9 years, Eves Garden and will be working from Unity Arts Studio in Andover.

Continuing with her own practice and running 1-1 sessions/groups of all skill levels, in hand built ceramics, painting etc.

DEBORAH PORTER

This piece was derived from a series of work processing old art wounds. A release working in print and shapes, allowing the negative space to form the composition all shapes relate to each other. The white areas breathe, the deep blue depths juxtapose a neon pink showing my sense of play.

BIO

Deborah studied at Winchester School of Art, Portsmouth and gained a degree in Illustration. Her creative career spans from illustrator, graphic designer to creative wellbeing practitioner. Her own practice comes from a place of healing and somatic art where she is inspired by automatism and the American Abstract Expressionist movement.

ELIZABETH HAMMOND

STATEMENT

From it’s inception this participatory artwork has been about bringing people’s ideas together to create something unique and transitory. The drawing is not complete until the last day of the exhibition, when the final participant has made the last mark on the scroll, encompassing all within the circle.

BIO

Elizabeth’s interdisciplinary practice is primarily about drawing in the expanded field today. She has a passion for drawing and sharing this with others. Exploring drawing as a noun and as a verb her work seeks to engender the same joy she experiences when making it, for the viewer and participants alike.

KATT GROVER

STATEMENT

In my practice, I emotionally ‘prime’ canvases by experimenting with backgrounds, exploring different feelings, painting styles, and mediums. I make paintings over paintings, developing complexity, depth and character through each iteration. It’s a meditation, a chance to lose myself and find the narratives hidden within. When ideas come, I pair them with a canvas that has already been imbued with a particular mood and backstory.

BIO

Often playful and nostalgic, Katt's work explores the interplay between reality and fiction through self-reflection, memory and narrative.

As a neurodivergent artist, her practice reflects the ways she experiences the world and acts as a lens through which she interpret and interacts with it.

MARTA LICHOCINSKA

STATEMENT

In my present works the colours of the past, scraps of memories provoke themselves to lead, building a strong narrative between past and present. Longing and belonging, childhood memories surrounded by flowers and symbols. Wrapped up in strong cultural influences of my Slavic soul. Deep colourful traditions which I was lucky to grow up.

BIO

I was born and grow up in Eastern Poland, where study sculpture and completed Art Education in Visual Arts at Rzeszow University with Masters degree. My interest in painting come when I move across the sea to England. Painting becomes a powerful tool to release my inner voice and communicate with outside world.

MICHAEL JOHNSON

STATEMENT

The shape of lies, in the context of truth, provoked me to collect ancient relics. Such relics have the capacity to speak of a past, they also represent a powerful metaphor as to how all governments, (in tandem with commercial news and social media outlets), proliferate lies. What is belief and what to believe?

BIO

Michael studied fine art at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design, learning from those who celebrated the philosophy that arose
out of the Bauhaus movement. Michael also studied at the London College of Printing and then at Middlesex Polytechnic.

For this exhibition, Michael takes inspiration from the artist Kandinsky with all that is '
Concerning the Spiritual in Art'!

PETER DRIVER

STATEMENT

I am primarily a printmaker but took up painting again after the death of my daughter in 2019. Hey Ya! is a song by Outkast - a song my daughter introduced me to. The painting is a celebration of the playful and uproarious spirit of Outkast.

BIO

Peter Driver works to integrate art and life, creating new knowledge through field and studio research. He presents his experiences of long-distance walks, explores ideas using woodcut prints, and wrestles many variables into abstract paintings: a variety of responses to the wonder and brokenness of living in the world.

PRUDENCE MALTBY

STATEMENT

My work is concerned with a framework of autobiographical reference, that doesn't necessarily owe its origins to landscape. I’m interested not so much with the geography of a place but with the spirit of a space acknowledging a life flavoured with the different rules and customs of faraway cultures. My aim is to present touchstones of reminiscence without allusions to places gripped by the complications of its past and the struggles of its present. Again, and again, they oscillate between exclusion and inclusion, between here and there, then, and now.

BIO

Prudence combines drawing and painting, collage and etching with curating exhibitions and coordinating visual arts projects, in England and abroad, her most recent, Insect Odyssey. She was a founder member of Cicatrix, an Arts Council awarded 4 year touring project, involving other artists and Commonwealth partners. She studied at Winchester School of Art.

SHARON KEARLEY

STATEMENT

This body of work explores linear connections of travel within the confines of compositional space, investigating the notion of rhythm and repetition.

“Repetition is a potent means of heightening the inner vibration....”, (Kandinsky).

Working in series, scale applying multiples and focused colour, Sharon's work challenges the rigid boundaries of weave.
