BELONGING | CAS ARTISTS SUMMER EXHIBITION

Artist Works & Information

Belonging is a group exhibition that includes the work of twelve artists from the Chapel Arts Studios Associate Artists community.

‘Belonging’ transcends the simple notion of fitting in. It encompasses a profound sense of identity, connection, and community. The contributing artists present a range of interpretations, reflecting on how belonging is both a personal and collective experience. Some artworks explore the duality inherent in the word ‘belonging’ itself, highlighting the tension between the desire to connect and the fulfilment found in being part of something greater. Others consider the emotional landscapes of loneliness and longing, juxtaposing these feelings with the comfort and security of community ties.

The relationship between belonging and the land also features prominently, with work examining the ephemeral and fragile connections we have with our environment. Themes of migration and the concept of home are explored, capturing experiences of displacement and the creation of new identities in different places.

The exhibition challenges the idea that belonging is merely about conforming, suggesting instead that true belonging involves having the courage to stand alone while still being part of a larger whole.
