Press Release Romsey Library AIR Residency

Elizabeth Hammond - Dates: 21.2.25 and 22.2.25 - Books of Wonder!

“Curiouser and curiouser!” Announcing our next Artist Residency in collaboration with

Romsey Library, with thanks to Test Valley Arts Foundation for their generous funding.

Chapel Arts Studios’ Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programme aims to enhance the interaction

and engagement between visitors and the diverse disciplines within our artistic communities

of Romsey.

Elizabeth Hammond is a passionate artist and educator based in Hampshire with a keen

interest in social engagement. She is a supportive and instinctive teacher who enjoys

facilitating creative experiences, teaching all ages and is committed to providing creative

opportunities for all. She is a Chapel Arts Studios Associate Artist and a Director of Artful

Collective CIC.

Inspired by the awe found in children's storybook classics and surrounded by the

volumes of imagination housed in the bookshelves of Romsey Library, artist Elizabeth

Hammond invites you to discover ‘Books of Wonder’ on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd

February.

Over the two days, between 10am to 4pm, children and adults alike are invited to drop-in to

Romsey Library and unveil the magic of their favourite stories, best-loved characters and

wonder worlds. During this time Elizabeth will be exploring her own wonder-filled miniatu

making and visitors are encouraged to learn more about her artistic practice, through

questions, dialogue and creative responses.

Elizabeth says: “There is something inherently playful about how the distorted scale of an

item can spark curiosity and fascination. The World of Beatrix Potter, Lewis Carroll’s

masterpiece “Alice in Wonderland”, and Mary Norton’s “The Borrowers” all use this device of

altered scale to evoke the feeling of monuments and miniatures, finding awe in the

everyday.”

An exhibition of the finished books made during the residency will be displayed on their ve

own miniature bookshelf.

Romsey Library are focusing on being Green and Thrifty this February half term holiday

and therefore all materials used during the residency (where possible) will be recycled,

recyclable or re-purposed.

A study of scale and a juxtaposition of the curious in the everyday is nothing new, as Elizabeth’s own exploration of Alice-like wonder, The Tales Series, uses drawing to investigate new narratives between seemingly conflicting objects and subjects. Through these incongruous compositions, a provoking and unusual narrative is created for the viewer.

This artist residency will allow Elizabeth to investigate this element of her practice in a new and exciting way.  For more on The Tale Series, see Elizabeth's website: www.elizabeth-hammond.com
